Shiva is the first god on this planet and the creator of universe. Maha Shivaratri is the great festival of convergence of Shiva and Shakti. Shakti is the concert of Lord Shiva and his one and only love. Maha Shivaratri falls on Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha in month of Magha according to the South Indian calendar. However according to North Indian calendar “Masik Shivaratri” in the month of phalguna is known as Maha Shivaratri. Lord Shiva is the most revered Hindu God and one among the three main deities of Hinduism. He is the great sage. Unlike form other gods he gives equal priority to Gods, humans, animals and even demons too. Most of the villains in Hindu Mythology pray to Lord Shiva. We had been listening to famous tales about the shiva from our childhood and many stories on Maha Shivaratri celebration. On the day of genesis of Shiva Lingam ( Lingodhbhavam) we are celebrating this festival and some says that Shivaratri is the marriage day of Shiva and Parvathi.
